This bathroom outlines a narrative of material transformation. Each surface tells a story of graceful aging, with chosen materials developing unique patinas over time. The design focuses on the physical changes brought by daily use.
Unlacquered brass darkens, copper panels oxidize to verdigris, and limewash walls shift in texture. An oiled wood vanity deepens its hue, while porous terracotta tiles absorb the passage of time. This creates a deeply layered and authentically lived-in space.
Every surface in this bathroom chronicles its own history.
Design Philosophy
The design embraces "patina as design." It highlights the beauty of natural aging and material transformation. Each surface is chosen to tell a "material narrative," developing character through daily use. This approach turns wear into an aesthetic feature.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first catches the vivid verdigris on the copper shower walls. Footsteps fall on the large terracotta tiles, grounding the space. Then, your gaze traces the shifting limewash walls and the darkening brass fixtures.
Light Study
Morning light softens the limewash walls, highlighting their chalky texture. Brass fixtures catch the light, showing subtle new gleams. Evening artificial light deepens the oiled wood vanity, making the copper verdigris glow against it.
Living Vignette
Water streaks leave new lines on the oxidizing copper shower panel. A wet handprint momentarily darkens the oiled wood vanity top.
Material Palette
Unlacquered brass: Feels solid. Darkens and gains character with use.
Raw copper panels: Feels cool. Oxidizes into vibrant verdigris.
Terracotta tiles: Feel porous. Absorbs water and foot traffic marks.
