Ivor House, Brixton Dining Room — Shifting Planes design direction

Planes Shift. Focus Narrows.

Dining Room • Ivor House, Brixton, London, UK
The dining ceiling lowers visually with deep grey paint. A dark wool rug grounds the table area. Heavy linen drapes enclose the zone when drawn. Substantial dining chairs define the space. Focused pendant lights brighten the intimate gathering spot. Recessed linear lights illuminate the kitchen and entry broadly. The kitchen maintains light walls for expansion. A textured wall behind the dining table adds depth. This creates distinct zones for focus and clarity.
This room guides attention and defines closeness.
Design Philosophy
This design uses Spatial Play to consciously shape perception. Dynamic Contrast differentiates zones. Darker planes and materials compress space, guiding intimate focus. Lighter areas remain expansive, offering broad clarity.
Spatial Narrative
The eye moves from the expansive, bright kitchen. It is drawn to the darker, compressed dining zone. Here, attention settles on the table, encouraging connection.
Light Study
Morning light filters softly through the linen drapes, providing diffused illumination. Evening brings strong, focused light over the dining table. Ambient linear lighting keeps the kitchen subtly bright.
Living Vignette
A hand reaches across the dining table for a shared dish. The soft clang of cutlery breaks the focused silence.
Material Palette
Deep cool grey paint: The deep cool grey paint creates a visually lower plane and holds its tone consistently over time. Dark charcoal wool rug: The dark charcoal wool rug feels soft and dense underfoot, developing a subtle sheen with age. Textured deep-toned wallpaper: The textured wallpaper offers visual depth, gaining character as light plays across its surface.
