Ivor House, Brixton Living Room — Monumental Glimpse design direction

Distorted Scale. Altered Perception.

Living Room • Ivor House, Brixton, London, UK
A custom, oversized dark metal frame now surrounds the central window. Seating shifts to a sprawling, low upholstered block. One wall receives large, polished chrome panels, creating a liquid surface. A monumental, raw concrete pendant light suspends centrally, adding significant weight. A tiny, stark white plinth is placed in the main path, redirecting movement. The glass coffee table is replaced by a monolithic dark stone block. These changes deconstruct common spatial perception, making everyday forms feel alien.
This room makes familiar objects feel newly alien.
Design Philosophy
The design applies Deconstructive Scale to challenge spatial perception. Familiar objects are distorted to arresting proportions. Material Exaggeration amplifies their presence. This creates an environment where common forms feel newly alien and grand.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is first drawn to the monumental concrete pendant light. Movement is deliberately interrupted by the small white plinth, forcing conscious navigation. Finally, the vast, low seating platform invites a grounded, immersive rest.
Light Study
Morning light floods through the dramatically framed window, sharpening details and reflecting off the chrome wall. As evening falls, the brutalist pendant casts a concentrated, weighty glow onto the dark stone table. The reflective chrome panels pick up subtle city lights, adding a cool, diffuse ambient layer.
Living Vignette
A guest pauses before the small white plinth, adjusting their path around its unexpected presence. The low seating platform supports a focused conversation, voices slightly absorbed by the coarse fabric.
Material Palette
Raw Concrete: It feels cool and heavy, developing a subtle patina over time. Mirror-Polished Chrome: It presents a cold, liquid surface, maintaining its sharp reflectivity with careful upkeep. Coarse Industrial Weave Fabric: It offers a tactile, robust texture, showing minimal wear over decades of use.
