Ivor House, Brixton Bathroom — Disjointed Proportions design direction

Disjointed Scale, Deliberate Intrigue.

Bathroom • Ivor House, Brixton, London, UK
An oversized ceramic basin stretches across the vanity wall. Irregularly cut black granite slabs form an uneven floor plane. Raw timber beams frame the shower enclosure. A single industrial floodlight casts a stark beam. An unexpected, tall storage column sits beside the toilet. This room intentionally confounds expectations of scale.
This room forces a re-evaluation of expected bathroom proportions.
Design Philosophy
This design applies Deconstructive Scale to challenge visual norms. Elements intentionally defy conventional sizing within the space. Material Cacophony introduces varied textures and forms. This creates intrigue rather than visual balance.
Spatial Narrative
The oversized basin immediately draws the eye, spanning the wall. Your path leads across the irregularly cut granite floor. The shower's timber frame anchors one corner.
Light Study
Morning light enters sharply, highlighting the basin's scale. The single floodlight creates a stark, focused beam, regardless of natural light. Evening transforms the room with deep shadows, emphasizing forms.
Living Vignette
Water rushes loudly into the wide, shallow basin. The rough timber shower frame feels solid to the touch.
Material Palette
Honed Black Granite Slabs: These irregular slabs feel cool and solid. They resist wear and develop a subtle sheen with time. Raw Timber Beams: Rough-hewn timber feels coarse and natural. It darkens and shows age through grain texture. Oversized White Ceramic: Smooth ceramic feels cool and clean. It maintains its bright white finish and cleans easily.
