Ivor House, Brixton Dining Room — Glimpse & Shelter design direction

Views Outside, Shelter Inside

Dining Room • Ivor House, Brixton, London, UK
A custom, high-backed banquette integrates into the dining wall. Deep olive green velvet covers this U-shaped form. A wide, low-hanging pendant light casts concentrated light over the banquette. This creates a deeply contained dining zone. By the windows, a comfortable armchair sits with a tall, sculptural floor lamp. This arrangement forms a dedicated point for viewing outside. Adjustable track lighting highlights exterior views. The room now balances contained comfort with expansive outlooks.
The design creates zones for both looking outward and feeling enclosed.
Design Philosophy
The design implements the Dual Experience framework. It creates distinct zones for both expansive engagement and contained contemplation. Architectural Signifiers define these areas, implying security and openness. Specific elements like the banquette and window seat clearly mark their purpose.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first goes to the armchair by the window, drawing you to the view. A subtle path guides you around a planter towards the dining area. You settle into the high-backed banquette, feeling enclosed and secure.
Light Study
In the morning, direct light from large windows illuminates the open view. It brightens the window seat, offering clear outward prospect. Evening brings a focused, warm glow from the pendant light over the banquette, marking the contained space. Adjustable spotlights highlight chosen architectural details or outside views.
Living Vignette
Someone reads a book, turned towards the large window. Another person shares a meal, speaking quietly across the low-hung pendant light.
