Carved Zones Define Open Living

Dining Room • Crescent Lane, Clapham, London, UK
The open kitchen and dining area gains clear definition. Nested volumes create varied experiences. Zoned functionality supports diverse activities. A lowered ceiling plane now covers the main dining and island. This creates an intimate zone overhead. A slatted wood screen partially divides the open plan. It provides visual separation without blocking light. A deeply recessed banquette offers a private dining nook. This area includes integrated storage. A dedicated coffee/tea alcove within kitchen cabinetry provides a focused station. Layered window treatments control light and privacy.
Defined zones offer varied modes of engagement.
Design Philosophy
This design addresses the open plan's lack of definition. It uses **Nested volumes** to create distinct areas. **Zoned functionality** ensures each space serves a clear purpose. This approach encourages both focused tasks and relaxed gatherings.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first lands on the new slatted wood screen. You then move towards the defined dining area under the lowered ceiling. You settle into the deep banquette for an intimate meal.
Light Study
Morning light floods in from large patio doors, softened by sheer blinds. Afternoon sun is controlled by opaque roller blinds, preventing glare. Evening light is focused by task lighting in the coffee alcove and soft overhead illumination.
Living Vignette
A child finishes homework at the round banquette table. Adults gather at the main dining table for conversation.
