Weller Street, Southwark Bathroom — Ample Correction design direction

Dimensions Shift. Perception Changes.

Bathroom • Weller Street, Southwark, London, UK
This bathroom challenges perception. An impossibly thin basin extends from the wall, defying standard scale. A monumental pendant light focuses illumination downwards. Wall sections now feature fine mosaic within larger tiles. An oversized shower screen stretches beyond the tub, creating visual length. A low-slung bench grounds the expansive view. Dark walnut and reflective mosaics provide material contrast. The room feels vast, not compact.
This bathroom makes you question what you know about dimensions.
Design Philosophy
Ample Correction plays with viewer perception. Familiar forms are intentionally re-proportioned here. Deconstructive Scale breaks down standard dimensions. Material Juxtaposition creates visual tension and interest.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye is drawn immediately to the impossibly thin basin. You walk past the oversized shower screen, feeling the room expand. A low stone bench invites a moment of pause.
Light Study
Morning light filters softly through, highlighting the varied textures of the mosaic walls. Evening brings focused, downward light from the large pendant, casting defined shadows. The space shifts from diffused brightness to contained drama.
Living Vignette
You reach for a towel, the thin basin edge cool under your fingertips. Water runs silently, reflecting the overhead light.
Material Palette
Matte white ceramic: This material feels cool and smooth, showing subtle wear over many years. Dark walnut wood: Walnut feels dense and warm, deepening in color and acquiring a rich patina with age. Reflective glass mosaic: Small glass pieces feel cool and smooth, maintaining their bright finish indefinitely. Large format porcelain tiles: These tiles feel hard and cool, resisting stains and retaining their texture over decades.
