Rutland Gate, Knightsbridge Kitchen — Zoned Articulation design direction

Defined Zones. Clear Experiences.

Kitchen • Rutland Gate, Knightsbridge, London, UK
The 'Culinary Core' explicitly defines the kitchen. A translucent screen and a dropped soffit separate it. Dark, dense colors mark this working zone. The 'Communal Hearth' designates the dining space. It features an open ceiling and lighter, reflective colors. Different flooring further distinguishes it. Deep blue matte lacquer cabinets outfit the 'Culinary Core.' Polished concrete grounds this utilitarian space. Compact furniture fits its function. Light oak flooring warms the 'Communal Hearth.' White textured wallpaper brightens its walls. Expansive seating and a soft rug invite gathering.
This room structures specific activities into distinct zones.
Design Philosophy
Functional dissection allocates specific activities to designated areas. Delimited experiences ensure each zone maintains its unique atmosphere. This approach creates clear boundaries for cooking and social engagement. Material and lighting shifts physically define each function.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first encounters the translucent screen dividing the room. You walk into the darker, contained 'Culinary Core' for prep. You then shift to the lighter, open 'Communal Hearth' to sit and gather.
Light Study
Morning light from the window brightens the 'Communal Hearth' first. It filters softly through the screen into the 'Culinary Core.' Evening uses distinct overhead fixtures, casting task light in the kitchen and an ambient glow in the dining area.
Living Vignette
A chef plates a meal under focused task lighting in the 'Culinary Core.' Guests converse comfortably around the dining table, bathed in a warm, diffused light.
Material Palette
Deep Blue Matte Lacquer: Smooth and uniform, it resists fingerprints and maintains its deep color over time. Light Oak Wood Flooring: It feels warm underfoot and develops a subtle patina with age. Polished Concrete: This surface feels cool and durable, gaining character through minor scuffs over years of use. Translucent Ribbed Glass: It diffuses light gently and maintains clarity, resisting scratches effectively.
