Dining Room • Rutland Gate, Knightsbridge, London, UK
An overwhelmingly thick window casing frames the exterior view. A monumental pendant light hangs low over the table. One dining chair is deliberately undersized, creating a stark contrast. This space manipulates visual scale.
Dark-painted wood forms the sculptural window frame. A vast, floor-to-ceiling mirror expands the perceived room volume. The dining table features a dark, minimalist surface. A subtly textured rug anchors the exaggerated forms.
The room actively reshapes how you see space.
Design Philosophy
This design uses Perceptual Shift to create a new experience of space. Exaggerated Form redefines familiar objects. Oversized elements manipulate the room's depth and scale. The deliberate contrast challenges expected proportions.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is immediately drawn to the monumental window casing. It then shifts to the impossibly large pendant light above the table. Attention settles on the deliberately undersized chair, creating visual tension.
Light Study
Morning light streams through the dramatically framed window, highlighting the casing's sculptural depth. Evening light, softened by the oversized pendant, casts long shadows across the table. The expansive mirror reflects all light, amplifying its presence.
Living Vignette
A single ceramic bowl rests on the expansive dark dining table. A stack of art books sits beside it, waiting to be explored.
Material Palette
Smooth, dark-painted wood: This matte wood absorbs light and maintains its deep color over time.
Textured plaster: The rough plaster surface adds a tactile quality and shows subtle variations with age.
Rich velvet: This plush velvet reflects light deeply and gains a soft patina with use.
