Rutland Gate, Knightsbridge Dining Room — Fabric Form design direction

Textiles Define Sculptural Forms

Dining Room • Rutland Gate, Knightsbridge, London, UK
A fabric canopy stretches taut above the dining table, forming a defined ceiling plane. Rigid upholstered panels clad the dining area walls, establishing firm boundaries. A woven fabric divider partially separates adjacent zones, guiding sightlines. Recessed lighting behind a translucent fabric panel provides a soft, glowing light. These textile forms define the dining zone without heavy structure. They create areas for focused activity and veiled passages for movement. Sculptural upholstered chairs provide distinct, comfortable seating. The room functions with intentionality, blending enclosure with open flow.
Textiles define space with architectural precision.
Design Philosophy
This design redefines textiles as architectural elements. It employs the 'Sculpted volumes' framework, creating enclosures from soft materials. The 'Material re-definition' framework allows fabrics to achieve unexpected rigor and form. The room becomes a composition of defined and veiled spaces, making every interaction intentional.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is drawn first to the tensioned fabric canopy defining the dining zone. Movement is guided by the translucent textile screen, creating veiled passages around the area. Guests are then invited to sit in the sharply tailored, sculptural upholstered chairs, anchoring them within the defined space.
Light Study
Morning light streams in from the large window, illuminating the fabric textures and highlighting the sculptural forms. In the evening, the backlit translucent fabric panel glows softly, providing a diffused, even light without harsh shadows. This internal light source complements the fading natural light, creating a focused ambiance.
Living Vignette
A hand rests on the firm, upholstered wall panel, feeling its subtle texture. Across the table, the precisely tailored chairs invite conversation within the softly lit, defined space.
Material Palette
Upholstered wall panels: The light grey fabric feels soft to the touch but maintains a firm, architectural presence; it will resist sagging over time. Engineered wood flooring: This flooring feels smooth underfoot, offers warmth to the space, and develops a subtle patina with age. Tensioned fabric canopy: The light grey canopy feels taut and smooth, providing a visually stable ceiling plane that retains its form.
