Light Shapes Every Surface

Kitchen • Amhurst Road, Hackney, London, UK
The ceiling becomes a luminous plane. Translucent fabric diffuses a continuous backlight. This light defines the entire upper boundary of the room. The island appears to float, its edges glowing with integrated LEDs. Cabinetry fronts are sleek, handle-less panels. Linear LEDs create pulls and emphasize form. A sandblasted glass backsplash diffuses light from behind. Recessed floor lighting guides movement through the space.
Light actively sculpts every surface in this room.
Design Philosophy
This design uses light as its primary material. It applies Luminal Architecture to actively shape forms. Dynamic Definition occurs as illumination defines every surface. Light is a functional and aesthetic element in this space.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first tracks the glowing ceiling plane. Linear floor lights guide you along the island's illuminated edge. You settle into a defined dining zone, enveloped by soft, diffused light.
Light Study
Morning light from external windows fills the space, mixing with the ceiling's soft glow. In the evening, the integrated linear lights and backlit panels become the primary sources, creating strong contrasts and focused illumination. Shadows deepen, defining architectural forms against bright planes.
Living Vignette
A hand reaches for a glowing cabinet pull. Light spills onto the counter as the door opens.
Material Palette
Stretched translucent fabric ceiling: This fabric feels smooth and disperses light evenly, maintaining its pristine surface for years. High-gloss white cabinetry: Its surface is slick and reflects light sharply, resisting daily wear with a durable finish. Translucent sandblasted glass: The glass feels finely textured and softens light, holding its etched appearance over time.
