Amhurst Road, Hackney Bathroom — Monumental Hold design direction

Immense Scale Commands Attention

Bathroom • Amhurst Road, Hackney, London, UK
An oversized cylindrical pendant light hangs low, dominating overhead space. A floor-to-ceiling mirror expands the room endlessly. A heavy stone basin and industrial faucet anchor the counter. This design challenges typical comfort perceptions. Walls wear a deep forest green. Large, dark slate tiles cover the floor. A thick, opaque stone slab partitions the shower. These robust elements create a sense of being enveloped and slightly overwhelmed.
This room deliberately challenges your perception of scale.
Design Philosophy
The design intentionally alters spatial perception. Exaggerated Scale disrupts conventional comfort with oversized elements. This creates a powerful feeling of being enveloped and somewhat overwhelmed. Material Oppression defines the room's substantial, weighty presence.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye goes immediately to the low-slung pendant light. You move across large slate tiles toward the heavy stone basin. The wall-to-wall mirror reflects every corner, expanding views.
Light Study
Morning light from the window illuminates the deep green walls. This light reveals the texture of the oversized basin. Evening light relies solely on the central pendant, casting strong shadows.
Living Vignette
You reach for the oversized faucet, its dark bronze weight substantial in hand. Water flows heavily into the stone basin.
Material Palette
Matte Painted Walls: Matte paint feels soft to the touch and deepens in color with age. Dark Slate Tiles: Dark slate tiles feel cool and grounded, developing a subtle patina with wear. Polished Black Stone: Polished black stone feels cool and smooth, showing water marks if not regularly cleaned.
