Amhurst Road, Hackney Bathroom — Assembled Fragments design direction

Fragments Assemble. Bathroom Reimagined.

Bathroom • Amhurst Road, Hackney, London, UK
A repurposed vintage console replaces the pedestal sink. Mismatched mirrors scatter across the wall, not a single cabinet. Exposed plumbing pipes, painted deep charcoal, run under the sink and around the bath. An antique wooden ladder serves as a towel rack, placed to command attention. White subway tiles cover the lower walls. A textured botanical wallpaper fills the upper half of one wall. Irregularly laid terracotta hexagon tiles cover the floor. A worn Kilim rug adds a textural interruption, anchoring the redesigned space.
Every object here contributes a distinct narrative.
Design Philosophy
This design builds a "Narrative space" from "Assembled Fragments." Each element, from the repurposed console to the mismatched mirrors, tells its own story. "Deliberate discontinuity" challenges traditional bathroom expectations. Unconventional pairings create a thought-provoking atmosphere, inviting closer inspection.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first lands on the scattered, mismatched mirrors. Your path leads past the antique ladder, a deliberate obstruction, towards the vintage console and vessel sink.
Light Study
Natural light from the window fills the room with a clear, even glow in the morning. Evening light, from artificial sources, casts defined shadows, emphasizing texture and depth.
Living Vignette
Reach for a towel from the antique ladder, its worn wood cool against your fingers. Water runs into the ceramic vessel sink, a quiet sound in the small room.
Material Palette
White subway tiles: Smooth, cool to the touch; shows wear as subtle grout discoloration over decades. Terracotta hexagon tiles: Earthy, warm underfoot; develops a rich, deeper patina with age. Dark wood: Solid, weighty; gains character through minor scuffs and polish over time.
