Amhurst Road, Hackney Dining Room — Porous Persona design direction

Ambiguous Enclosure. Shifting Views.

Dining Room • Amhurst Road, Hackney, London, UK
Tall, open shelving units with large gaps now delineate the dining area from the study nook and kitchen. A sheer, pale lilac curtain defines the study nook, suggesting privacy without full concealment. An antiqued mirror wall in the dining area offers a distorted view of the room, not the outside. These elements create visually porous 'rooms within rooms'. Circular circulation paths guide movement, encouraging detours around semi-enclosed zones. Seating in these areas uses firm, unyielding materials. Deep plum paint accents the kitchen island cabinetry and selected walls. Polished concrete flooring unifies the entire space.
This room makes every boundary both present and absent.
Design Philosophy
This design intentionally blurs the lines of spatial definition. It uses **Deliberate Ambiguity** to question traditional enclosure. **Illusionary Boundaries** are crafted with porous screens and translucent fabrics, challenging perceived privacy. Distorted reflections and circling pathways make the room’s true nature uncertain.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first registers the fractured views through open shelving units. You are encouraged to walk along circular paths around the semi-enclosed zones. You sit on surprisingly firm surfaces, observing the room's distorted reflections.
Light Study
Morning light filters softly through the sheer lilac curtain, diffusing into the study nook. By evening, pendant lights cast dappled patterns across the dining area, blurring its edges. The antiqued mirror catches and scatters ambient light without offering a clear reflection.
Living Vignette
A guest peers past the open shelving, catching a partial glimpse of kitchen activity. Another adjusts their posture, finding the firm seating a deliberate challenge to comfort.
Material Palette
Polished concrete flooring: This surface feels cool and hard, developing a subtle patina over time. Pale lilac sheer fabric: This textile feels light and delicate, softening with age without losing its translucent quality. Antiqued, tinted mirror panels: This glass surface feels smooth and cool, maintaining its distorted reflectivity indefinitely. Dark metal frames: This material feels cool and rigid, holding its precise form for decades.
