Nested Vistas: Defined Bathroom Zones

Bathroom • Amhurst Road, Hackney, London, UK
A frosted glass shower pod installs directly within the existing bathtub footprint, creating a contained wet chamber. Dark honed basalt tiles replace the floor, embedding light pebble strips to define specific zones. A small, recessed wooden bench niche sits under the window, offering a brief resting spot. The mirror cabinet is removed, replaced by a minimalist, frameless mirror with concealed linear lighting. All fixtures are updated to sleek, polished chrome. These changes create a series of distinct zones, inviting a deliberate pause before engaging with each function.
The room separates specific functions into distinct zones.
Design Philosophy
The design applies Zoned Functionality to segment the compact space. Each area is distinct, encouraging a deliberate pause before engagement. Subtractive Privacy defines spaces without full enclosure. Material and light shifts delineate functional boundaries, creating clarity.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first lands on the glowing, frameless mirror above the sink. You walk across segmented floor textures to reach the contained shower pod. A recessed wooden bench offers a quiet moment under the window.
Light Study
Morning light streams through the window, highlighting the wooden niche. Concealed linear LEDs beneath the vanity and shower pod cast an upward glow at night. This diffused light emphasizes floor transitions and defines boundaries in the evening.
Living Vignette
After showering, water beads quickly on the glass pod. A clean hand towel rests ready on the recessed wooden bench.
Material Palette
Honed basalt tiles: They feel cool and smooth underfoot. They age by developing a soft, worn finish. Frosted tempered glass: It feels cool and opaque to the touch. It maintains its diffused look over time. Marine-grade plywood: It feels warm and durable. It develops a rich patina with use.
