Bedroom • Florida Street, Bethnal Green, London, UK
The existing built-in now carves a deep reading nook by the window. Soft acoustic felt lines this niche. A broad, low platform bed anchors the room's center. This open plan maximizes usable floor space.
A freestanding perforated metal screen divides the entry from the sleeping zone. It redirects circulation without full enclosure. Layered lighting offers general diffused light and specific task lighting within the nook. A textured wool rug defines the sleeping area.
The design delivers distinct areas for rest and focused activity.
Design Philosophy
The design creates a space both open and secure. It incorporates the framework of reading nooks within open plans. This allows for quiet contemplation and focused activity in one footprint. The layout balances expansive views with intimately defined zones.
Spatial Narrative
Upon entering, your eye travels past the perforated metal screen towards the central platform bed. You walk around the low bed, drawn to the deep reading nook by the window. Here, you settle into a quiet, protected space.
Light Study
Morning light streams in through the large window, softly illuminating the entire room. In the evening, diffused overhead light provides general brightness. Adjustable task lighting in the reading nook creates a focused glow for quiet activities.
Living Vignette
You open a book in the deep nook, the felt walls quieting the room. Outside, a gentle rain begins to fall against the glass.
