Found Objects, Personal Histories

Kitchen • 10 5th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94118
A forgotten niche holds a single, unique object. Vintage and new cabinets sit in an asymmetrical arrangement. Salvaged ceramic tiles replace a section of the backsplash. These tiles show their imperfections without restoration. Mismatched hardware dots the cabinet faces. Soft, ambient light reveals objects, it does not highlight them. The room feels collected, not decorated. Each element suggests its own story.
This room reveals its history through collected objects.
Design Philosophy
This design creates a space with deep personal resonance. Elements are placed as if gathered over time, following an Accidental Arrangement. Each object tells an Implied Biography through its form or history. The room encourages quiet discovery, not obvious display.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first finds the single object within its quiet niche. It then travels across the varied collection of cabinets and mismatched hardware. Movement through the space reveals individual pieces, encouraging close observation.
Light Study
Morning light filters softly into the room, revealing textures gradually. Evening brings focused task lighting, illuminating surfaces for use. Shadows deepen, allowing objects to recede and emerge subtly.
Living Vignette
A hand rests on the cool, imperfect surface of a salvaged tile. The scent of coffee rises from a plain mug on the counter.
Material Palette
Distressed wood: This wood shows its age through visible wear. It gains character from every mark. Salvaged ceramic: Imperfect surfaces and faded glazes mark these tiles. They hint at a past life. Tarnished brass: This metal develops a rich patina. It softens with age and use.
