Alcove Shifts Focus, Opens Space

Bathroom • 10 5th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94118
The room defines distinct zones through light and surface. Walls transition from deep charcoal to light off-white, guiding the eye upward. A dark stained oak vanity anchors the lower space. The window frame broadens, enhancing outward views. An overhead aluminum panel reflects light over the vanity. A small, dark stone stool provides a visual pause. Undyed wool grounds the floor. Each material supports the shift from enclosure to expansion.
This room zones focus and expansion through light and surface.
Design Philosophy
This design employs Zoning through light to define distinct areas. Graduated surfaces manage visual depth. Walls lighten from a deep base, drawing the eye upward. Focused task light at the vanity contrasts with overall ambient light, creating varied experiences.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first grounds on the dark vanity and wall. It then lifts along the graduated plaster, releasing towards the broad window. A small dark stone stool invites a moment of stillness beside the functional zone.
Light Study
Morning light diffuses through the broad window, softening the room's darker tones. Evening brings focused task lighting over the vanity, highlighting the mirror area. The polished aluminum ceiling panel reflects both natural and artificial light.
Living Vignette
You sit on the stone pedestal stool, observing your reflection. The cool surface of the oak vanity is within easy reach.
