Living Room • 1967 Green St, San Francisco, CA 94123
This room presents an ongoing dialogue of material extremes. A rough concrete slab supports a clear glass coffee table, reversing typical strength perceptions. The main seating, covered in coarse linen, uses polished dark leather cushions for contrast. This design features deliberate, unexpected physical interactions.
One wall has deeply textured, matte charcoal plaster. Facing it, a glossy lacquered panel reflects light sharply. Flooring transitions from warm wood to raw concrete in the primary path. Industrial lighting casts soft light, while delicate fixtures emit sharp beams.
This room forces a constant re-evaluation of its materials.
Design Philosophy
This design explores the concept of Opposite Resonance. It applies Dichotomous Textures, pairing coarse materials with smooth, matte with gloss. Reversed Perceptions guide material choices, challenging expected functions. Every element deliberately introduces its inverse.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is drawn immediately to the concrete and glass coffee table. Walking toward it, your steps transition from warm wood to raw concrete. The coarse linen sofa invites you to sit, offering unexpected leather cushions.
Light Study
Morning light streams through large windows, highlighting the glossy wall panel's sharp reflections. In the evening, industrial fixtures cast soft, ambient light throughout the room. Delicate pendants then provide focused, sharp beams on specific surfaces.
Living Vignette
A hand traces the cool, smooth surface of a polished leather cushion. Fingertips then brush against the raw, uneven texture of the concrete coffee table base.
Material Palette
Raw Concrete: It feels cool and unyielding; it gains character with age through subtle patination.
Undyed Linen: It feels coarse and natural; it softens over time while maintaining its inherent texture.
Polished Leather: It feels smooth and cool; it develops a rich patina and deeper sheen with use.
Matte Clay Plaster: It feels porous and powdery; its deep texture remains constant while its color gently mutes.
