Floral wallpaper and ornate cabinetry are gone. Raw concrete meets polished grey plaster on opposing walls. Matte charcoal cabinetry contrasts with high-gloss black hardware. Rough-hewn concrete forms the countertop and integrated sinks. This room now features deliberate visual friction.
A matte grey tub defines an intimate alcove, clad in woven steel mesh. A sculptural basin slightly impedes direct movement. Directional task lighting over the vanity cuts through ambient backlighting from a raw steel panel. This creates an affected play of light.
This room forces a dialogue between its stark differences.
Design Philosophy
This design explores Material Contrast by opposing raw and refined textures. It uses Monochromatic Play within a grey palette to highlight these differences. The goal is to create visual friction, inviting closer inspection. Every element forces a dialogue between opposing forces.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first catches the raw concrete wall by the vanity. The sculptural basin forces a slight sidestep as you approach. The space then draws you toward the matte grey tub, secluded within its woven steel alcove.
Light Study
Harsh LED track lighting over the vanity illuminates details sharply, creating deep shadows in morning or evening. Evening brings soft, indirect cove lighting along the polished plaster wall, warming its texture. The tub alcove remains dramatically downlit, a constant, focused glow.
Living Vignette
Water streams from the polished black faucet, reflecting sharply in the concrete basin. The cool steel mesh of the tub alcove feels crisp against your back.
Material Palette
Raw concrete wall finish: Raw concrete walls feel cool and rough. It will develop a subtle, unique patina with age.
Polished grey Venetian plaster: Polished grey Venetian plaster feels smooth and cool. It reflects light deeply, revealing minor character marks over years.
Rough-hewn concrete countertop: Rough-hewn concrete feels porous and solid. It will absorb elements, developing unique surface marks with use.
