Living Room • 2070 Bush St, San Francisco, CA 94115
An oversized chandelier lowers dramatically over the piano. It pulls the ceiling down. A grand armchair sits alone, its bulk redefining nearby space. A tall, slim floor lamp rises sharply, exaggerating vertical distance.
A wide, shallow step marks the threshold to the next room. It extends into the main space. Directional spotlights highlight an empty wall segment. They draw focus to intentional voids. This design re-proportions the room's entire feel.
This room forces new perceptions of scale.
Design Philosophy
Exaggerated Minimalism strips away the unnecessary. Elements are intentionally oversized or understated to disrupt perception. Juxtaposed Dimensions create new scale relationships. A low chandelier meets a tall lamp, forcing a double-take. This design compels a new way to interact with the room's physical size.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first lands on the exceptionally low-hanging chandelier. It then travels up the isolated, tall floor lamp. The gaze settles on the wide, shallow step, defining a new boundary to the adjacent room.
Light Study
Morning light filters in gently, highlighting the heavy linen texture of the armchair. It casts long, soft shadows across the floor. Evening spotlights create sharp contrasts, emphasizing scale and form on the bare walls.
Living Vignette
One sits in the oversized armchair. The low chandelier commands presence above the piano. Fingers trace the cool, honed surface of a barely-there side table.
Material Palette
Polished dark wood: This floor reflects light sharply. It shows scuffs and deepens in tone with time.
Matte greige paint: This paint absorbs light softly. Its subtle texture hides minor wall imperfections.
Blackened steel: Blackened steel provides a stark, deep finish. It gains a soft, finger-marked patina with handling.
