Perceptual Zoning: Focus and Expansion

Office • 2070 Bush St, San Francisco, CA 94115
A corner opposite the window becomes a 'focus zone.' Deep, matte charcoal paint covers a wall segment and the ceiling above it. A large, low-slung lounge chair defines this compressed space. The main work area, adjacent to the window, uses light, neutral tones and a clear glass desk top. This zone feels expansive and bright, releasing the space. Deep, matte paints and plush fabrics absorb light and sound in the compressed zone. Light, reflective surfaces like a glass tabletop and smooth, light-colored walls define the expansive zone. Dark wood millwork throughout the room provides a grounding element.
This room facilitates both deep contemplation and active productivity.
Design Philosophy
The design uses perceptual zoning to create distinct spatial experiences. Dynamic scale manipulates perceived volume and sensory engagement. This supports varied states of mind within a single room. Zones shift from intense focus to expansive thought.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first lands on the deep charcoal focus zone. You then move through the room to the bright, expansive work area by the window. You sit deeply absorbed in the compressed zone or upright for clear thought in the open zone.
Light Study
Morning sun floods the expansive work zone through the large window. This provides bright, diffused light for clarity. Evening light activates focused, low-level lamps, deepening the compressed zone's intimacy.
Living Vignette
A book lies open on the low-slung lounge chair. A pen rests beside a partially filled notebook on the glass desk.
Material Palette
Plush, textured fabric: It feels soft and enclosing. It develops a subtle sheen with use. Clear glass tabletop: It feels smooth and cool. It maintains clarity with regular cleaning.
