2070 Bush St Office — Indigo Rift design direction

Indigo Rift Fractures Library

Office • 2070 Bush St, San Francisco, CA 94115
An indigo architectural element cuts through the existing wood built-ins. This element extends from floor to ceiling, creating a profound visual disjunction. Existing wood is restained to a deep, black-brown hue, intensifying contrast. A polished concrete floor replaces the original wood in the fractured zone. Directional track lighting creates stark shadows and highlights. A custom bench, seemingly carved from the new indigo plane, redirects movement. An irregular crimson rug overlaps both old and new surfaces, adding visual friction.
This room makes a visual argument about tension and form.
Design Philosophy
This design employs Deconstructive Color to challenge traditional room perceptions. Stratified Planes create visual tension between old and new elements. The intervention forces a new dialogue with the existing architecture. It argues for a new way to interact with a familiar space.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye immediately follows the sharp, indigo-drenched plane that slices through the room. This form then guides you around the custom bench, forcing an unusual path. You settle against the new structure, viewing the original elements from a new perspective.
Light Study
Morning light streams in through sheer drapes, highlighting the high-gloss floor and the indigo plane. As day progresses, recessed spotlights cast sharp, defined shadows, emphasizing architectural edges. Evening brings dramatic contrast, with strong highlights on new forms and deep pockets of shadow in older elements.
Living Vignette
A solitary book rests on the dark wood, its pages catching a sliver of directed light. The crimson rug grounds the sharp geometry, offering an anchor in the fractured space.
Material Palette
Deep indigo high-gloss paint: This finish reflects light sharply, emphasizing the angular intervention. It maintains its intense color over time. Polished concrete: The surface feels cool and hard underfoot, providing a sleek, reflective plane. It resists wear and develops a subtle patina with age. Ebonized wood: This darkened wood feels dense and smooth, offering a stark counterpoint to the indigo. It deepens in richness over decades.
