Kitchen Redefines Sensory Experience

Kitchen • 2070 Bush St, San Francisco, CA 94115
The old kitchen felt heavy with dark wood and bright yellow walls. This design introduces a range of natural materials and intentional sensory feedback. Cabinetry blends unsealed woods and matte composites. These choices offer subtle scents and varied textures. Acoustic panels integrate into cabinet interiors, enhancing sound absorption. Countertops mix cool soapstone with warm honed wood surfaces. Flooring transitions from textured terracotta in the cooking zone to smoother wood. A small, quiet water feature provides a distinct trickling sound. Quiet appliances and varied metal and leather hardware complete the space.
This kitchen engages every sense intentionally.
Design Philosophy
This design recontextualizes familiar kitchen elements. It provokes new perceptions through precise material selections. Tactile Narratives guide the varied surface temperatures and textures. Acoustic Landscapes shape intentional sound experiences within the space.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye moves across the varied countertop materials, contrasting cool soapstone with warm wood. You step from the subtly textured terracotta in the main cooking zone. The floor then transitions to smoother engineered wood in the adjacent dining area.
Light Study
Morning light streams through the large windows, brightening the matte plaster walls. Afternoon light softens across the varied, textured surfaces. Evening light casts subtle shadows, highlighting the depth of natural materials.
Living Vignette
You feel the cool soapstone against your fingers while preparing food. The gentle trickle of water from the feature complements the quiet sounds of cooking.
Material Palette
Unsealed White Oak: It offers a natural, porous texture and deepens in hue with time. Honed Soapstone: It provides a cool, smooth surface that develops a rich patina over years of use. Unglazed Terracotta Tiles: These tiles present an earthy, grounding texture underfoot and gain character with wear.
