Intentional Asymmetry, Stable Design

Kitchen • 2070 Bush St, San Francisco, CA 94115
Bright yellow walls become pale greige, visually expanding the space. Dark granite countertops are replaced with deep charcoal quartzite. Existing cabinetry now wears a muted, darker stain. Large light gray porcelain tiles cover the floor. An off-center French door opening defines the entry. A floating concrete shelf extends unevenly from one wall. The linear suspension light hangs off-center over the main island. A custom arched portal shifts left, framing the adjacent room.
The room makes intentional imbalance feel completely stable.
Design Philosophy
This design challenges visual balance through Deconstructed Symmetry. Elements are intentionally off-center, creating dynamic interest. Layered Perception guides the eye, revealing depth and unexpected views. The room achieves stability despite its intentional shifts.
Spatial Narrative
The off-center arched portal immediately draws the eye, inviting a step forward. Walking into the space, the floating concrete shelf pulls attention to the wall. The custom brass cart alongside the island anchors the central prep area.
Light Study
Morning light floods through multiple windows, illuminating the pale greige walls. It brightens the light gray floor, softening the deep charcoal counters. Evening light is caught by the off-center linear fixture, creating focused task illumination.
Living Vignette
A bowl of lemons sits on the floating concrete shelf, its bright yellow a sharp contrast. A hand reaches for a cutting board from the open shelf below the island.
Material Palette
Honed Deep Charcoal Quartzite: Its matte finish feels cool and durable, resisting stains over time. Terracotta Zellige Tile: These handmade tiles add an imperfect, warm texture that deepens with age. Patinated Brass: Brass develops a rich, dark patina, adding depth and character.
