Dark Entry, Bright Vanity Unfolds

Bathroom • 2070 Bush St, San Francisco, CA 94115
A new partition encloses the water closet and shower. Dark microcement walls absorb sound and light. A focused light source defines this compressed zone. This creates an intimate entry point. The main vanity area opens wide. Light Venetian plaster covers the walls. Floor-to-ceiling mirrors extend the space. A floating ash wood vanity spans the wall.
This room defines space through light and dark progression.
Design Philosophy
The design establishes a clear path. An Experiential Journey unfolds from dark to light. Brutal Minimalism guides material choices and spatial divisions. Each zone serves a distinct purpose.
Spatial Narrative
The dark partition draws the eye upon entry. You step into a compressed water closet. Then, the space expands into a bright vanity area.
Light Study
Morning light fills the main vanity, amplified by mirrors. Concealed lighting brightens the dark water closet at any time. Evening light provides broad, even illumination in the open area.
Living Vignette
Stepping from the dark shower, the light vanity feels expansive. The cool concrete floor grounds the moment.
Material Palette
Dark grey microcement: Its matte finish feels cool and absorbs light. It gains subtle imperfections over time. Light cream Venetian plaster: This wall finish offers a smooth, cool touch. It reflects light gently without glare. Polished concrete tiles: These large tiles feel solid and cool underfoot. Their polished surface develops a slight sheen with use. Light natural ash wood: The vanity offers a warm, smooth grain. It resists moisture well and maintains its light tone.
