2196 Jackson St Bathroom — Sheltered Narrative design direction

Niche Defines Grand Room Core

Bathroom • 2196 Jackson St, San Francisco, CA 94115
A deep, upholstered banquette niche creates a protected zone. Soft curtains of tactile fabric enclose this area. A low-hanging pendant light casts a focused glow. This space holds personal objects and books. Modular, low-profile seating maintains open sightlines. Light textured plaster highlights the niche's presence. Stone and concrete define the main coffee table. A plush, deep pile rug enhances the niche's comfort.
This room builds a private world inside a larger one.
Design Philosophy
This design creates an intimate core within a grand architectural shell. The concept of Embedded privacy defines a distinct, quiet zone. Contextual storytelling places personal history within this protected space. Durable elements in the surrounding area support the central focus.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is drawn immediately to the deep upholstered niche. It then moves to the surrounding open-plan area. One sits within the niche for quiet reflection.
Light Study
Morning light enters from expansive windows, brightening the open living area. It softly illuminates the outer perimeter of the niche. In the evening, the low-hanging pendant casts a warm, focused glow directly within the niche.
Living Vignette
A book rests open on the niche's integrated shelf. Outside, a glass sits on the stone coffee table.
Material Palette
Velvet upholstery: It feels soft and dense, developing a rich sheen over time. Burnished bronze: It feels cool and smooth, acquiring a dark patina with age. Distressed wood: It feels textured and varied, showing character through use.
