Living Room • 2196 Jackson St, San Francisco, CA 94115
A colossal spherical light hangs low, commanding the central space. Miniature armchairs gather around a vast, low coffee table. One entire wall reflects dark, distorting perceived depth. Oversized architectural trim thickens the room's borders.
This design presents scale in an unexpected way. Objects of disparate sizes compel a re-evaluation of known proportions. The familiar becomes strikingly new, prompting fresh interaction with the everyday.
This room directly manipulates your perception of space.
Design Philosophy
This design applies Surrealism in scale to challenge standard perceptions. Juxtapositional irony is created by extreme object size differences. It re-evaluates everyday proportions and creates a playful disorientation. The room explores new spatial relationships.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first fixes on the immense, low-hanging light fixture. It then scans the tiny chairs and vast coffee table, noticing the distorted mirror reflection. Finally, you settle into a miniature armchair, enveloped by the shifting proportions.
Light Study
Morning light enters subtly, highlighting the dark mirror's depth and the rug's texture. The colossal pendant remains dormant, a sculptural form in the daylight. Evening sees the pendant glowing, casting a warm, enveloping pool of light around the seating zone.
Living Vignette
A hand reaches across the granite table, making a tiny cup seem even smaller. The oversized baseboard frames the quiet conversation.
