The entry area around the fireplace becomes a compressed threshold. Deep charcoal paint covers the fireplace wall and immediate ceiling coffers. A custom, low bench replaces the old sofa, set into the dark nook. This zone creates an intimate, grounded entrance.
The main living area beyond opens up, free of clutter. Light-colored polished concrete replaces existing parquet flooring. A large, low-slung sofa sits in the center, light-toned. Sheer drapes frame the view, extending visual depth.
This room defines space with light and shadow.
Design Philosophy
The design uses Zonal Layering to define distinct areas. Material Contrast creates both intimacy and expansion. A dark entry zone compresses the view. Beyond, light materials and clear space expand the main living area.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first finds the dark, compressed fireplace nook. You move past this intimate zone into the expansive main living space. Here, you settle onto the low, light-toned sofa.
Light Study
Morning light floods the expansive zone through sheer drapes, softening the large space. Evening brings dramatic contrast; focused downlights define the dark entry. The main living area holds diffused ambient light at night.
Living Vignette
A guest sits on the low bench by the fireplace, conversing quietly. Across the room, someone reads on the light sofa, bathed in filtered window light.
Material Palette
Polished concrete: Feels cool and smooth underfoot. It develops a subtle patina over time.
Deep charcoal paint: Absorbs light, creating a sense of depth. It maintains its flat, matte finish.
Light, textured boucle: Offers a soft, inviting touch. It holds its shape and resists pilling with age.
