Living Room • 2196 Jackson St, San Francisco, CA 94115
A raw concrete fireplace surround defines the room. It starkly contrasts the original classical mantel. Rough-sawn wood planks line a feature wall, opposing a polished metal console. This creates a tactile dialogue between hard and soft, old and new.
A deeply textured wool rug grounds the main seating area. It absorbs sound, creating an acoustic counterpoint. Exposed industrial pendants replace recessed lights. Plush velvet seating meets unyielding steel frames, adding another layer of material tension.
This room activates the senses through material opposition.
Design Philosophy
The design employs `Deconstructive juxtaposition` to create material tension. Rough textures directly oppose smooth finishes. This generates a `Sensory narrative` that engages the eye and touch. Dark elements ground light ones, providing a visual anchor.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye moves directly to the imposing raw concrete fireplace. It then sweeps across the opposing rough-sawn wood feature wall. You settle onto the low-slung sofa, anchored by the textured wool rug.
Light Study
Morning light streams in from large windows, illuminating the varied textures. It highlights the raw grain of wood and the subtle sheen of polished metal. In the evening, industrial pendants cast focused pools of light, emphasizing specific material contrasts.
Living Vignette
The heavy wool rug muffles footfalls across the room. A hand brushes the cool, smooth surface of the black marble table.
Material Palette
Rough-sawn wood: Its surface is uneven and organic, softening slightly with age and touch.
Hand-knotted wool: This material is soft and dense underfoot, becoming more compressed and lived-in over years.
