Bedroom • 2196 Jackson St, San Francisco, CA 94115
This room strips away all decorative layers. Walls reveal raw concrete or severe plaster, exposing the fundamental structure. Seating transforms into monolithic, sculptural forms devoid of softness. This creates a stark, uncompromising honesty.
Harsh, directed track lighting casts sharp shadows, emphasizing architectural elements. Windows remain bare, connecting the interior directly to the outside. Floors are untextured, either polished concrete or severe sisal, promoting direct circulation. Only essential, sculptural objects remain.
This room presents an uncompromising honesty of form.
Design Philosophy
This design strips away all excess, revealing only essential forms and materials. It embraces Confrontational Minimalism, challenging conventional ideas of comfort and decoration. The space embodies Unadorned Structure, celebrating raw concrete and severe plaster. Every element serves to highlight this stark, intentional presence.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is drawn immediately to the single, central sculptural object. Movement is clear and direct across the vast, untextured floor. Seating occurs on the elongated, monolithic concrete bench, a deliberate act of choosing its stark form.
Light Study
Morning light streams unfiltered through bare windows, casting sharp, defined lines across the unadorned surfaces. It starkly illuminates the raw concrete and severe plaster textures. Evening hours bring focused track lighting, creating dramatic, deep shadows that emphasize sculptural forms and architectural planes.
Living Vignette
A hand runs across the cool, unyielding surface of the monolithic concrete bench. The soft scrape of a severe, untextured rug sounds with each deliberate step.
Material Palette
Raw, exposed concrete: Raw, exposed concrete feels cool and permanent. Its surface hardens and develops a unique, subtle patina over time.
Blackened steel: Blackened steel presents a dense, unyielding weight. Its dark finish will deepen, gaining subtle variations with age.
Untextured sisal: Untextured sisal provides a rigid, natural expanse underfoot. It maintains its coarse texture and stability through extensive use.
