Living Room • 2535 Vallejo St, San Francisco, CA 94123
This expansive living room now negotiates its traditional grandeur. A perforated raw steel screen filters light and views, asserting an industrial edge. A polished black marble plinth grounds the primary seating, contrasting sharply with soft textiles. Rough-hewn concrete seating defines new pathways and gathering zones.
New lighting layers create contrasting intensities across the space. Thick linen drapery introduces raw softness, defining window areas without fully obscuring rich wood. Reconfigured seating flows around the concrete bench, forming distinct conversation areas. This space uses each material to define its own presence.
This room uses material tension to activate its entire space.
Design Philosophy
This design uses Material Dialectics to activate the room. Each element actively asserts its material presence against another, creating dynamic tension. Controlled Resistance balances grandeur with honest materiality. Contrasts are sharp and purposeful, grounding the space.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye is drawn first to the perforated raw steel screen framing the window. You navigate around the long, low marble plinth and the substantial concrete bench, which define distinct paths. You settle into a reconfigured seating area, held by these assertive forms.
Light Study
Morning light filters through the perforated steel screen, casting diffused patterns across the floor. Evening brings a soft ambient wash from linear LED coves, while focused spotlights highlight textured art and the concrete bench, creating zones of dramatic intensity.
Living Vignette
A heavy art book rests open on the cool black marble plinth. Fingers trace the rough surface of the concrete bench while conversation flows across the room.
Material Palette
Raw, perforated steel: This industrial material provides a matte surface that will develop a subtle patination over time.
Polished black marble: This sleek, hard surface offers deep reflection and maintains its high polish with care.
Unfinished concrete: Its rugged, tactile texture grounds the space and will deepen in character as it ages.
Thick, slubby linen: This natural textile introduces a soft, matte finish that drapes gracefully and softens further with use.
