Living Room • 439-443 Jersey St, San Francisco, CA 94114
Seating floats diagonally, detaching from wall alignment. A deconstructed rug sits deliberately off-center. An irregularly shaped mirror creates disorienting reflections on one wall. A cluster of varied tables replaces the traditional coffee table, emphasizing asymmetry. A floor-to-ceiling sculptural element draws the eye upwards, creating vertical tension.
Polished concrete contrasts dark wood flooring. Textured plaster catches light unevenly on accent walls. Stainless steel and mirrored glass bounce light unpredictably. Focused spotlights create deep shadows, illuminating offset elements. A raised platform shifts the floor plane, unbalancing the space.
This room actively engages the eye, preventing visual complacency.
Design Philosophy
The design employs Deconstructivist forms to disrupt traditional symmetry. Visual anchor points pull the eye in unexpected directions, creating constant motion. Juxtaposed textures prevent visual complacency, keeping the environment stimulating and engaging. This approach reconfigures the space for active perception.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first catches the monumental off-center art. It then follows the diagonal lines of the seating. You move around the raised platform, discovering new visual angles. Your body rests in the reconfigured modular seating.
Light Study
Morning light unpredictably bounces off mirrored surfaces, creating shifting patterns and deep shadows. In the evening, focused spotlights dramatically illuminate specific, offset elements. These angled lights create high contrast, defining new forms.
Living Vignette
A hand reaches across a rough linen cushion to adjust a modular seat. Light catches the irregular surface of a metal panel, reflecting movement across the room.
Material Palette
Polished concrete: Smooth and cool, it develops a resilient, subtle patina over time.
Textured plaster: Rough and uneven, it catches light dramatically and deepens its character with subtle wear.
Stainless steel: Cool and hard, it reflects light sharply and maintains its sheen for decades.
