Kitchen • 439-443 Jersey St, San Francisco, CA 94114
This design divides the open space into distinct sensory zones. The kitchen offers reflective, bright surfaces and lively sound. The dining area provides acoustic absorption and intimate quiet. The lounge features a hushed auditory environment.
Radiant floor heating warms the dining area. The kitchen remains cool, contrasting with the lounge's breezy feel. Overhead lights vary for task focus or diffused warmth. Flooring shifts delineate pathways, marking tactile transitions.
Each zone delivers a specific sensory input.
Design Philosophy
Experiential Zoning separates distinct sensory inputs. Each area is designed for a specific perception of sound, touch, and temperature. Layered Perception builds these explicit experiences throughout the space. Scent and visual dynamics are deliberately composed in each zone.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first notices the kitchen's bright, reflective surfaces. Pathways lead through varied flooring, shifting tactile experiences underfoot. Guests settle into soft dining chairs or the deep pile lounge rug, each offering distinct comfort.
Light Study
Morning light enters broadly through garden doors, illuminating the lounge. Evening brings warm, diffused light to the dining area. Kinetic lighting elements in the lounge cast shifting shadows, altering the visual scene.
Living Vignette
A guest traces the smooth kitchen counter, feeling its cool surface. The subtle, warm scent from the dining area reaches them.
Material Palette
Felted wool panels: Soft and sound-absorbing, these panels offer quiet tactile comfort and age gracefully.
