Dining Room • 439-443 Jersey St, San Francisco, CA 94114
A large, unsealed corten steel panel now anchors the dining area. Its surface will rust, developing an earthy patina. New chairs feature unlacquered brass and raw saddle leather. These materials will visibly darken and scratch with use.
Walls wear a textured limewash finish, curing over time. An unfinished metal fixture replaces the chandelier, designed to oxidize. A raw wool rug shows foot traffic, compressing and lightening. This room displays its own physical history.
Every surface in this room records its own history.
Design Philosophy
This design integrates visible change into the room's structure. Materials are chosen specifically for their distinct aging processes. The approach follows Deliberate Erosion and Temporal Aesthetics frameworks. Every mark from time or use becomes an intentional part of the room's character.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first finds the large corten steel panel behind the table. It anchors the space, drawing focus to the dining area. You walk around the substantial wool rug, then settle into a raw leather seat.
Light Study
Morning light from bi-fold doors illuminates the limewash walls, revealing their subtle texture. The raw wool rug appears brighter, showing natural variations. In the evening, the unfinished metal fixture casts a focused glow, emphasizing the corten's deep tones.
Living Vignette
A hand brushes the cooler, raw saddle leather of a chair arm. Dinner conversation continues as light catches a new scratch on the brass frame.
