Kitchen • 439-443 Jersey St, San Francisco, CA 94114
The existing rectangular island is replaced. It becomes an L-shaped, split-level design. One arm is a monolithic block of honed concrete. The other is a cantilevered dark oak surface. This creates asymmetric massing and function. A large abstract art piece is installed off-center. Its cobalt blue and muted grey palette draws focus. This shifts attention from traditional kitchen elements.
Directional track lights replace overhead lighting. They create dramatic light pools on the art and island. Other areas remain in softer shadow. The dining table is repositioned and rotated. It breaks the main axis and improves garden views. Open shelving, with mismatched sizes and materials, provides sculptural storage. An irregularly shaped wool rug defines the living area. Its form echoes the asymmetric theme.
This space defies conventional balance.
Design Philosophy
The Unbalanced Grid design challenges conventional visual symmetry. This creates dynamic tension that activates the eye. Elements are deliberately weighted unequally to foster surprising focal points. This approach aligns with De Stijl principles of geometric asymmetry and Constructivism's focus on functional art.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first lands on the off-center abstract art piece. You then move around the L-shaped concrete and oak island. Finally, you settle into the living area defined by the irregular rug.
Light Study
Morning sun streams through bifold doors, highlighting the garden view. Directional track lights sculpt the art and island with sharp evening shadows. The space shifts from bright and open to dramatically focused.
Living Vignette
A visitor traces the rough texture of the concrete island. She then glances at the shifting blue tones within the abstract artwork.
Material Palette
Honed concrete: It feels cool and smooth. It gains a subtle patina over time.
Polished black marble: It feels dense and reflective. It develops a rich sheen with use.
Dark stained oak: It feels warm and textured. It deepens in color as it ages.
