439-443 Jersey St Dining Room — Edge & Veil design direction

Materials Clash. Senses Engage.

Dining Room • 439-443 Jersey St, San Francisco, CA 94114
A raw concrete feature wall or ceiling introduces immediate material contrast. An unfinished timber dining table top anchors the space, supported by a polished steel base. An iridescent rug lies beneath, providing a soft counterpoint to the dark floor. Sculptural lighting combines raw metal with diffused light. A deeply textured textile panel offers a soft, absorbent surface opposite a reflective one. Dining chairs blend hard metal frames with soft velvet upholstery.
This room makes every surface demand attention.
Design Philosophy
This design leverages Brutalist Elegance to present materials in their most honest form. It employs Juxtaposed Textures to create intentional sensory friction. Each surface demands individual attention, preventing visual complacency. The room is designed to be experienced rather than merely observed.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is drawn first to the raw concrete feature wall. It then moves to the robust timber table and the shimmering rug beneath. Seating here places occupants within a deliberate material tension.
Light Study
Morning light from the bi-fold door highlights the concrete’s texture and the rug’s shifting colors. Evening brings diffused, soft light from the sculptural fixture. This low light softens hard edges and deepens material perceptions.
Living Vignette
A hand brushes the rough concrete. The metallic base of a glass clinks against the timber tabletop.
Material Palette
Raw, sealed concrete: It feels cool and unyielding, gaining subtle patina over time. Unfinished, thick-cut timber: It feels organic and textured, developing deeper character with use. Heavy, textured felted wool: It feels soft and warm, absorbing sound and retaining its rich surface quality.
