Dining Room • 439-443 Jersey St, San Francisco, CA 94114
Accent walls feature a rough-troweled plaster finish, contrasting with smooth adjacent surfaces. The existing chandelier is replaced by a cluster of clear and opaque pendant lights, introducing layered forms. A new dining table presents a rough-hewn wood top on sleek metal legs, creating a stark material juxtaposition.
A large, hand-knotted rug anchors the space with subtle, irregular texture underfoot. Bespoke wall shelving combines raw wood planks with dark metal uprights. Each element contributes to a continuous sensory dialogue, building a layered narrative of touch.
This room orchestrates a dialogue between contrasting textures.
Design Philosophy
This design emphasizes Material Dialogue by thoughtfully juxtaposing textures throughout the space. It creates a continuous sensory dialogue where materials subtly reference each other. Sensory Layering builds a rich tactile experience, making the room feel grounded and refined. Each element contributes to a layered narrative of touch.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye is drawn first to the textured plaster wall defining the dining area. You walk towards the large dining table, your feet sensing the irregular texture of the rug. You settle into a dark leather chair, facing the layered raw wood and metal shelving.
Light Study
Morning light streams through the bifold doors, highlighting the varied texture of the accent plaster wall. Evening light from the pendant cluster casts soft pools onto the table, emphasizing material depths. Shadows deepen at sunset, revealing the rug's subtle, uneven weave.
Living Vignette
A hand slides across the rough-sawn dining table edge, tracing its unique grain. Fingers trace the subtle irregularities of the hand-knotted rug underfoot during conversation.
Material Palette
Rough-troweled natural clay plaster: It feels earthy and irregular, mellowing in tone and texture over time.
Live-edge walnut or oak: It feels organic and substantial underhand, developing a deeper patina with age.
Blackened steel: It feels cool and smooth to the touch, retaining its dark, matte finish over decades.
