134 N McCadden Pl Living Room — Iron & Oak Imperative design direction

Iron, Oak: Materials Demand Engagement.

Living Room • 134 N McCadden Pl, Los Angeles, CA 90004
Walls are stripped to rough plaster. Exposed concrete lintels meet sleek black steel window frames. A monolithic concrete fireplace contrasts with a polished black marble hearth. These elements establish forceful visual tension. A heavy flax linen sofa pairs with patinated steel lounge chairs. A rough oak coffee table sits atop a shaggy sheepskin rug. Blackened steel chandeliers provide industrial light, while delicate glass sconces offer softer illumination. This room asserts its material dialogue.
This room asserts its identity through material confrontation.
Design Philosophy
This design centers on material confrontation. Industrial Chic elements like raw concrete and blackened steel are paramount. Wabi-Sabi Contrast appears in the juxtaposition of unfinished surfaces with refined details. The space demands direct tactile and visual engagement.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is drawn first to the monolithic concrete fireplace. Large arched windows then pull the gaze towards outdoor greenery. Seating on the flax linen sofa grounds the experience, offering a view of both contrasting elements.
Light Study
Morning light streams through arched windows, highlighting plaster imperfections. Evenings bring a dramatic interplay as blackened steel chandeliers cast sharp shadows. Delicate glass sconces offer soft, diffused pools of light against the walls.
Living Vignette
A hand slides across the rough coffee table, feeling the raw timber grain. Fingers then sink into the expansive, shaggy sheepskin rug.
Material Palette
Unpolished Concrete: It feels cool and monolithic, holding its rugged texture over time. Polished Black Marble: It feels smooth and sleek, maintaining its deep luster with care. Heavy Flax Linen: It feels robust and natural, softening gently as it ages.
