Living Room • 134 N McCadden Pl, Los Angeles, CA 90004
A wall of unpolished basalt slabs commands the fireplace area. Its dark, cool surface contrasts with new limewashed walls. A plush, deep alpaca rug covers the main seating zone. This softness abruptly ends at a raw concrete passage.
Heavy raw linen drapes frame the windows, their frayed edges catching light. Hidden emitters release a damp earth scent and a low hum. Furniture directs a winding path. This path forces interaction with changing floor textures.
Tactile and auditory shifts challenge complacent comfort directly.
Design Philosophy
This design prioritizes sensory awareness over passive comfort. Thermal Contrast is established between rough basalt and soft alpaca. Auditory Layering uses a low hum and silence to maintain alertness. Tactile Confrontation challenges expected textures underfoot.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye is drawn to the stark basalt wall on entry. A low stone coffee table anchors the central space. The reconfigured sectional guides you around it, forcing a transition from soft rug to cool concrete.
Light Study
Morning light streams through raw linen drapes, highlighting their frayed edges. This light creates long, sharp shadows on the concrete. In the evening, oscillating uplights from the coffered ceiling cast moving, soft glows.
Living Vignette
A hand presses into the deep alpaca pile, feeling its immediate warmth. Bare feet hesitate at the boundary where plushness meets cold concrete.
Material Palette
Basalt Stone: Unpolished basalt feels cool and unyielding, maintaining its stark presence indefinitely.
Alpaca Shag Rug: Its deep, off-white pile feels luxurious and keeps its yielding quality with careful use.
Raw Linen: Heavy raw linen feels textured and breathable, its frayed edges developing more character over time.
