508 Broadway Kitchen — Abyss & Apex design direction

Abrupt Shifts. Spatial Release.

Kitchen • 508 Broadway, New York, NY 10012
The grotto pantry creates extreme compression. Blackened steel and dark slate clad this narrow space. It contrasts with the expansive main kitchen. Pure white lacquer cabinets define the open area. A monolithic white marble island features a dramatic void. This void offers unexpected release within its solid form. Lighting shifts from targeted spots in the pantry to broad ambient light in the kitchen. This emphasizes bright, reflective surfaces.
This room forces an abrupt shift between constriction and expansion.
Design Philosophy
The design creates a visceral experience through abrupt shifts. It leverages the "Compression and release" framework. Dark, heavy materials compress the grotto pantry, while light, reflective surfaces expand the main kitchen. This creates confrontational spatial contrasts.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye is drawn immediately to the grotto pantry. You walk through its narrow, dark passage, then step into the wide, bright kitchen. You end up at the stark, monolithic island.
Light Study
Morning sun fills the main kitchen with broad, diffused light. Intense under-cabinet lighting creates sharp lines and bright surfaces. Evening brings localized spotlights to the dark pantry, deepening its enclosure.
Living Vignette
A hand reaches into the dark grotto for a specific spice. The chef then pivots, placing the container onto the expansive white marble counter.
Material Palette
Blackened steel: Feels cold and hard to the touch. It develops a subtle, matte patina over time. Polished white statuary marble: Feels cool and smooth. It shows veins and may develop etches with use. Dark slate: Feels rough and dense. It retains its deep color and texture over decades. Seamless white glass: Feels slick and reflects light sharply. It maintains its pristine finish with cleaning.
