Illuminated Planes Define Modern Kitchen

Kitchen • 508 Broadway, New York, NY 10012
Existing cabinetry is replaced with handle-less units. These upper cabinets glow from within frosted panels. The island becomes a sculptural, floating form, its base subtly lit. Walls are resurfaced with polished plaster, spreading light evenly. A large light fixture mimics a skylight above the island. Recessed linear lights wash vertical surfaces, adding height. Under-cabinet and toe-kick lighting define floor and counter planes. A light gray micro-cement floor enhances overall luminosity.
This room uses light to define space and create drama.
Design Philosophy
This design employs Perceptual Architecture to redefine spatial boundaries. Light actively shapes perceived volume, creating an expansive feel. Scenographic Design frames moments of quiet drama. Strategic illumination achieves dynamic functional clarity throughout the space.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is drawn upwards to the central light source. Movement is guided towards the illuminated, sculptural island. The defined floor plane encourages clear, purposeful navigation.
Light Study
Morning light enters from the window, spreading softly across polished walls. As dusk falls, integrated lighting creates dramatic washes on vertical surfaces. Under-cabinet and toe-kick strips define distinct zones, adding depth to the room.
Living Vignette
A knife blade glints under the island's bright overhead light. Shadows disappear as ingredients are chopped on the luminous counter.
Material Palette
Polished plaster: Smooth to the touch, it reflects light softly, developing a subtle patina over time. Matte white lacquer: This finish is smooth and resists fingerprints, maintaining its clean, muted appearance. Light gray micro-cement: The floor feels cool and seamless, developing character with use without showing heavy wear.
